Disposal of HIPAA Compliant Computers

Disposal of HIPAA Compliant Computers

Recycling computers, and data storage for Hospitals and medical offices must be handled properly. We help you maintain HIPAA compliance by keeping patient records secure until all data has been destroyed and verified. Your electronics recycling is safe with us.

2. Perform Data Destruction

To make a computer HIPAA-compliant for disposal, all data must be irrecoverable. There are two main methods:

  • Data Wiping: Use certified data-wiping software that follows Department of Defense (DoD) standards. Software such as DBAN or Blancco can overwrite all data multiple times, making it nearly impossible to recover.

  • Physical Destruction: For computers that are completely outdated or no longer needed, physically destroying the hard drive is another option. Crushing, shredding, or degaussing the drive can render data unrecoverable.

3. Document the Disposal Process

Maintain a Disposal Log that documents each device’s data destruction process. Include:

  • Device serial number
  • Date and time of disposal
  • Method used for data destruction
  • Signatures of personnel responsible for the disposal

This documentation serves as proof of HIPAA compliance in the event of an audit.
